Completely Mashed Up

Pictures from vintage and new magazines or books, a pair of scissors and imagination. This is all that StudioKoten uses to create a new world. Sometimes scary, sometimes sweet, but always full of humour and colourful. All collages by StudioKoten are handmade.

StudioKoten was established in 2014 by Patricia Koten (1968) and is based in Amsterdam. StudioKoten creates collages primarily as non-commissioned work, but also in the form of commissioned illustrations for books and magazines.Artists like Magritte, Dali, Matisse and Rodtsjenko were the main inspiration for Patricia Koten. She is self-taught. Besides making collages, she also works as an HR-Manager.

About the exhibition Plastic

‘Plastic, it is as artificial as it is real. To me, this inherent contradiction converts into themes like emotion, beauty and pollution.

’Plastic Tears (13)*

Emotions are often harnessed and conditioned. We observe and learn how to emotionally express ourselves. At the same time we are exposed to so many images that, would these all penetrate our minds, move one to tears. But what is reality and what is (partially) staged? When do we see real tears and not tears of feigned sorrow?

What is ideal beauty? Who dictates what is beautiful? Have we not gone to extremes? Many people strive to look alike, losing much of their personality in the process. Are they still beautiful or are they becoming a caricature of themselves?

Plastic Trouble (15)*

It is almost impossible to imagine a world without plastic. Plastic is everywhere, it has made our life easier. But how do we proceed from here? How do we deal with the consequences of plastic waste, suffocating and drowning animals? Burdening the environment because of chemical seepage from the plastic? Plastic, she ascended like a goddess, but how long before she is devoured forever?
