From the winter of 2008 Ilse visits Finland regularly. Then she roams through compact, dark pine woods, suddenly finding herself in the bright light of leafless birches or on the shore of one of the vast lakes of Finland.

The Dutch landscape (17, 18)*

Quietness is omnipresent in Finland, but it is rather rare in our country. One of the exceptions is the coastal area close to which Ilse grew up. Therefore you will find her at the seaside when Finnish nature is not at hand and she is longing for silence, pureness and emptiness.

Ilse is touched by such unspoilt, pure nature and uses her paintings to search for a new relation between humanity and his self-created environment and nature, where emotions and ratio are in a harmonic equilibrium.
In her paintings Ilse van den Berk transforms nature into poetry and vulnerability; combines ratio and emotion. Even if her works appear to be painted intuitively: they are the result of an intensive search with the formal means lines, shapes, colors, and how they harmonize
